Did You Know?

Did you know that French Toast was originally called "pain perdu," which translates to "lost bread" in French? This name comes from the idea that it was a way to use up stale bread before it went to waste. So, in a sense, you're helping reduce food waste while enjoying a delicious treat!

Instructions:

  1. Let's get started! First, in a large bowl, add the eggs and milk, then begin whisking.
  2. Now, add the vanilla extract, cinnamon, and sugar, and continue whisking until everything is well combined.
  3. Preheat a non-stick frying pan (or whichever pan you have) over medium heat and add the butter. Wait until it melts and covers the entire surface of the pan.
  4. It's time to dip the slices of bread into the liquid mixture we made, making sure the bread is well-coated on both sides.
  5. Now, simply place the bread slices in the hot pan and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side (depending on your stove’s heat), or until golden brown and crispy.
  6. Done! Easy, right? Serve hot with maple syrup and fresh fruit to taste. Personally, I like to sprinkle a little powdered sugar and cinnamon on top.

Preparation Tips:

  • Super tip! Use bread from the day before to get a firmer texture and prevent it from falling apart when dipping it in the egg mixture.
  • Give it an extra flavor boost by adding a little nutmeg or cardamom to the egg mixture.
  • If you prefer or need a lactose-free option, it's better to use lactose-free milk, almond milk, or oat milk instead of regular milk.
  • Make sure to cook the bread over medium heat, never high, to ensure it browns evenly and becomes crispy on the outside but stays soft inside, and most importantly, doesn't burn and taste bad.
  • If you don't have butter, you can use coconut oil or clarified butter for a healthier option.

Nutritional Benefits:

This French Toast recipe is not only delicious but also provides a good amount of protein thanks to the eggs, which are essential for muscle repair and growth. Additionally, the bread provides carbohydrates that will give you energy to start the day, while the butter, in moderation, adds healthy fats that contribute to the proper functioning of the nervous system. On the other hand, cinnamon not only enhances the flavor but also has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and may help regulate blood sugar levels. Furthermore, milk adds calcium, which, as we all know, helps strengthen bones and teeth. If you decide to top it with fresh fruit, you’ll get additional fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants, making this recipe a great, balanced, and delicious breakfast option.

History or Inspiration Behind the Recipe:

French Toast, known in many countries as "pain français" or "tostadas francesas," has a long history dating back to the 5th century in Europe. Back then, it was mainly prepared as a way to use up stale bread and enhance its flavor. It was often soaked in an egg and milk mixture and then fried to make it tastier and prevent waste. While its name suggests French origin, it is actually made similarly in many countries with different regional variations, so it's not specifically of French origin. Over time, this recipe has become a classic breakfast, evolving into a dish that can be both sweet or savory depending on the tastes and ingredients available in the region or country.

Serving Suggestions:

  • You can pair it with a glass of fresh orange juice or a fruit smoothie to complement the sweet and fresh flavors.
  • Obviously, pair it with a cup of coffee or black tea for a complete breakfast experience.
  • Give your French Toast an extra touch of freshness by adding Greek yogurt on top, along with a little honey.
  • If you prefer, a mixed fruit salad with strawberries, blueberries, and kiwi can be the perfect side dish for this plate.
  • If you're craving something more indulgent and therefore delicious, you can add a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream as a topping.

Recipe Variations

  • French Toast with Fruit: This one is so fresh! Add strawberries, banana, or sautéed apples as a topping for a fruity and delicious twist.

  • French Toast with Nutella: Oh! How delightful, Nutella makes everything better! Just spread a layer of Nutella on the bread slices before serving for a sweeter and creamier touch.

  • Vegan French Toast: For our vegan friends, here's an option where we swap eggs for mashed banana or a chia seed mixture, and use almond or oat milk instead of regular milk.

  • French Toast with Cream Cheese and Jam: Another extra-sweet option! Spread cream cheese and jam on the bread slices before serving for a delicious flavor contrast.

  • Savory French Toast: This version gives a rich, savory flavor! Just omit the sugar and cinnamon, and add a pinch of salt and dried herbs to the egg mixture. Serve with avocado and bacon for a savory breakfast.

So, French Toast is a simple, delicious recipe that you can customize in so many ways, both sweet and savory. Whether you enjoy it the classic way or want to get creative, this dish is always a great option to start your day or, why not, to indulge yourself at any time. Give it a try and bon appétit!”
